Why flats matter here

Bournemouth is a town of flats

Nearly half the homes in Bournemouth are flats, so most moves here start or end in a block. That changes how a move is planned.

49.1% of homes are flats

At the 2021 Census, flats or maisonettes made up 49.1% of dwellings in Bournemouth, compared with 36.9% across the whole Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole area. If you live in a flat here, your move is the normal case, not the exception.

Parking near the block

In the Bournemouth area, BCP Council offers a contractors parking dispensation for commercial vehicles that need to park in a restricted area for a job. It costs £22 for 1 day or £45 for 1 week, per vehicle, is issued as a virtual permit, and must be applied for online at least 3 days before. Removals are not named, so check with the council whether it covers your move.

Moving to Poole or Christchurch

The council runs a different scheme in each of its three former areas: daily waivers in Poole and a tradesmen dispensation in Christchurch, each with its own price and notice period. Check the scheme for the end of the move you are parking at.

Stairs, lifts and the walk to the van

Two flats with the same number of bedrooms can take very different times to move. A ground floor flat with the van outside is quick. A top floor flat with no lift and a long walk to the road can take twice as long, and the crew size is set with that in mind.

What to tell us on the form

  • Which floor you are on, at both addresses
  • Whether there is a lift, and roughly how big it is
  • How far it is from the main door to where a van can stop
  • Tight turns on the stairs, or a sofa that only just came in
  • Any rules from the building about move times

Large pieces that will not fit a stairwell or lift may need taking apart first. Dismantling and rebuilding can be added to the quote.

Sorting the building side of a flat move

Blocks of flats usually have a managing agent or a building manager. A short email to them a week or two ahead saves trouble on the day.

Book the lift

Some blocks let you reserve the lift for a move, or ask you to fit protective covers inside it. Ask the managing agent how it works in your building and which hours are allowed.

Protect communal areas

Hallways, stair rails and entrance doors are shared, and damage can come back to you through the lease. Blankets and careful carrying protect walls and corners, and propping doors safely keeps neighbours moving.

Check parking at the block

Some blocks have their own car park or a loading space, others rely on the street. Find out whether the van can use private parking, and if not, look at the council scheme for that area.

Typical prices

What a flat removal typically costs

National guide figures for local moves where you pack yourself. Floors, lifts and walking distance move a quote up or down within these ranges.

PropertyTypical price
Studio or 1-bed flat£400 to £700
2-bed flat£650 to £1,100
3-bed flat£900 to £1,600

Typical prices for local moves under 25 miles, from the BestBuilders 2026 UK removals price guide, which lists them by number of bedrooms. Your written quote is based on your own move.

Moving a studio with only a few pieces of furniture? A man and van booked by the hour can work out cheaper, as long as the stairs are taken into account.

Packing in a small space

Packing a flat without blocking the hallway

In a flat, packed boxes have nowhere to go but the hallway, which slows the crew down. Pack room by room, stack boxes in each room rather than by the front door, and keep a clear path from the furthest room to the exit.

  • Use smaller boxes for books so they can be carried down stairs safely
  • Label each box with the room it goes to in the new flat
  • Keep the kettle, chargers and bedding in one box that travels last

If time is short, packing can be added to the quote. See the packing options on our house removals page.

Questions

Common questions about flat removals in Bournemouth

How much does a flat removal in Bournemouth cost?

Typical prices for a local self-pack move under 25 miles are £400 to £700 for a studio or 1-bed flat and £650 to £1,100 for a 2-bed, according to the BestBuilders 2026 UK price guide. Upper floors without a lift and a long walk to the van add time. Your written quote is based on your own move.

Does it cost more if there is no lift?

It can. Carrying everything up or down several flights takes longer and may need an extra person. Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift at both addresses so the quote reflects it.

Do I need to book the lift in my block?

Ask your managing agent or building manager. Some buildings let you reserve the lift for a move or ask for protective covers, and some limit move times. Sorting it a week or two ahead avoids delays on the day.

Where will the van park outside my flat?

That depends on the block. Check whether there is a car park or loading space the van can use. If it has to park on a restricted street in the Bournemouth area, BCP Council runs a contractors parking dispensation, but removals are not mentioned, so check with the council whether it covers your move.

What if my sofa will not fit down the stairs?

Many sofas, beds and wardrobes can be taken apart and rebuilt at the new flat. Mention large pieces on the form, especially if they were difficult to get in, and dismantling can be added to the quote.

Who is responsible for the communal hallway?

Shared areas belong to the building, and damage can come back to leaseholders or tenants. Crews protect corners, rails and doors with blankets and carry carefully, and it helps to clear any of your own items from shared spaces first.

Is a man and van enough for a studio flat?

Often, yes, if you have only a few pieces of furniture and some boxes. Stairs still matter, so a two-person van is usually safer than driver only for an upper floor flat.
